Reno Salmara Female, 16, Jedi Order | Play-By: Alexis Bledel Name: Reno Salmara Nicknames: None Age: 16 Sex: Female Species: Human Home World: Naboo Faction: Jedi Order Title: Padawan Knighthood: None Rank: None
Hair: Brunette color, sitting at shoulder length. It is naturally straight though often can be found in waves or curls due to the fact she keeps it held neat and tidy in a plait at the back of her head so as not to get in her way in a battle or in training. She only lets it hang loose on formal occasions or when she is relaxing by herself in her off-duty time. Eyes: She has quite wide eyes that are a blue color which seem to change in intensity depending on her mood. For example, if she is feeling angry they will change almost to the color of ice. If she is calm and peaceful, they can be the color of the bluest ocean. Body Shape: She is slender, though trains often to keep herself well toned. Though her height is the average for a female human, most of it comes from her long legs. Height: 5’7 Weight: 126lbs Scars, Piercings, Tattoos: Sometimes she has thought about getting a tattoo but she needs a good enough reason, something with meaning, in order to go through with it. She has no piercings and no scars....yet. Languages: Basic, Binary (Understands) Clothing and Armor:She wears the standard Jedi Robes of the Jedi Order, the same color as Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. A White undertunic with a sandy colored, beige outertunic, white pants, brown boots and a deep brown cloak when required. She prefers not to wear the cloak too often as she doesn’t like the weight of it. Now that the Clone Wars have begun, she has also taken up some armor to wear on the battlefield in the form of white modified Clone Trooper Armor. It has been modified in order to allow more flexibility, and has the Jedi Order’s symbol emblazoned in blue on the shoulders. Weaponry:She carries only her lightsaber with her. Resources: While she understands and follows the Jedi’s teachings of attatchment, she does have only one possession other than her lightsaber. It is a necklace she crafted herself which, when opened, displays a hologram of a young woman holding a small girl in her arms while a soft melody plays. Thus far, not even her master has discovered she has it as she keeps it concealed underneath her Jedi Robes, sometimes even in a concealed pocket when not hanging round her neck. She is not sure if the person in the hologram is her mother, but the tune she knows is a lullaby her mother used to sing to her. Having it in the locket, where she can hear it often, helps her to let go of the memory as she knows it cannot be lost. Appearance: Plain, Quiet, a pale shadow. It is very rare anyone really notices Reno, because she has a tendency to simply blend into the background and when they do notice her, there is nothing particularly striking about her. That is of course, unless they try and look deeper. Her deep blue eyes will betray how she is truly feeling to anyone who cares enough to look, and her beauty though understated shines through when truly looked at. She carries herself with an air of tranquillity and ease, her long yet quite stride giving her the appearance of almost gliding along when she walks. Her robes are rarely found to be dishevelled or dirty, kept in as pristine a condition as she can manage, which reflects the strict boundaries she places on herself in regards to the Jedi Code. She looks every bit the professional despite being young, right down to keeping every strand of hair held back in a tight plait. Despite this, she carries a quality about her that makes her seem approachable and likeable, not someone to run away from or be scared to talk to out of the blue. Younglings tend to gravitate towards her when she’s in the temple because of this, and it is rare Reno will pass anyone by without giving them a smile or a friendly nod hello. Strengths:
+Speed and Stealth – Her long legs give her a long and graceful stride, enabling her to walk and run distances in a shorter time than others. She is fluid in her movements and has a quiet footfall which give her the upper hand when trying to get to places undetected. +Calm – Reno is not one to let her emotions get the better of her, her mind calm and focused which allows her to meditate and connect with the force easily as well as be able to look at a situation in a balanced and equal manner with very little personal preference coloring her perception. +Mind – The key to most of Reno’s strengths comes from her mind. She is a fast learner with a photographic memory that helps her excel in her training and in particular anything that requires a quick mental reaction. As such, Reno is practically a human database and can repeat information in exactly the way she has read them or learnt them, and can recall them at a moment’s notice. Of course, information that she hasn’t recalled or had been learnt a long time before is fuzzy and liable to mistakes as with any human. +Slicer – Reno became interested in computers and the systems that run them at a young age, taking it upon herself to learn as much as she could about them – even things that weren’t strictly legal. This is a big divergence from her usual stance on doing things in the correct, legal procedure and thus is the last person anyone would suspect to have this ability. She is far from being good enough that she can guarantee she’ll never be caught, but she is far from being an amateur at it. +Team Player – Reno is willing to trust in and work with anyone until they give her reason to withdraw it. She prefers to see the good in everybody, focus on it and work with their strengths rather than point out their weaknesses. She’ll go out of her way to help those around her should they need it and people tend to confide in her because of her warm and approachable nature, knowing they will not be betrayed.
Weaknesses:
-Over-thinker: While her quick, analytical mind can be a strength it can also be a weakness. Often she is not content with settling with the first thing that comes into her head, and tries looking for back up plans and covering possible complications. She doesn’t like to leave anything to chance and often will become uncertain as to what the best course of action is when she has many different directions to go in. -Shyness – Reno is no leader. While she is capable of working in a partnership and a team she doesn’t tend to approach people, rather waiting for them to come to her. She doesn’t strive to take an active role, instead preferring to stay and work in the background to make things happen, happy to take orders and do as asked rather than be the one to make the decisions because of how conflicted she gets when trying to make one. It is something she needs to work on, especially at times like this. -Closed Off – While she is happy for others to open up to her, rarely does she let anyone in to the emotions and feelings that are hidden behind tightly locked doors. While she can keep her mind and appearance calm, her core is anything but balanced and eventually it will culminate in a loss of control. -Duelling – While her command of the force is one of her greatest strengths, her skill in a duel is one of her greatest weaknesses. As it is, she dislikes confrontation so when those confrontations turn violent it unsettles her usually unshakeable calm. While she has the knowledge of how to fight, and can call on the force to aid her, she finds it hard to calm herself enough to flawlessly meld the two together. -Law Abiding – Reno knows the Jedi Code backwards and forwards, and makes a point of understanding and remembering every detail of a mission briefing so she is clear on what needs to be done and when by. She is unwilling to bend or break any of these rules and often can waste time questioning someone’s motives when she feels they go against what she has been taught. For many this can be both distracting and annoying, and causes unnecessary worry and concern when she starts to raise the consequences of such actions.
Goals: - Become a Jedi Knight -Once a Knight, Train as a Jedi Consular -Improve her Lightsaber Skills -Visit Naboo to see her mother and finally put a face to the faceless woman of her memories.
Fears: -Being thrown out of the Jedi Order: Feeling like her mother sent her away to the Jedi, and the Jedi having taken her in, has caused a fear of being rejected by themselves also to form. -Betrayal: Although Reno befriends many and believes in the good in them, she fears always that the dark can easily overtake and she will be betrayed in the worse possible way. She rarely forms bonds of true trust and her camaraderie with her fellow Jedi will never go deep enough to form true friendships. After all, the one person who was supposed to have always looked after her had given her away so easily – who’s to say those she could care about again wouldn’t do the same? -The Dark Side – Like the rest of the Jedi, she can feel the Dark Side clouding and poisoning every move the force helps them make. Extensive research has caused a little paranoia in this sense, as she knows the dark side to be powerful and manipulative and she fears one day it will take over her but she won’t realise it.
Personality: Reno is an intelligent, hard-working girl with a passion for learning all she can and a determination to be the best she can. She is devoted to the Jedi Order and its teachings, almost to the point where she is blinded by it and tends to keep away from anything that threatens a violation of the Code or of her place in its Order. She is quite shy, tending to blend into the background and preferring to be there, spending much of her spare time when she isn’t with her Master or training, in the Jedi Archives or practising her control of the force. Rarely does she actively seek social interactions which others find strange as she isn’t socially awkward and can function well when working within a team. In fact, her fast thinking can give her quite a sharp and quick wit and she has an unfalteringly kind heart that reaches out to anyone who wishes to confide in her. She doesn’t like to take charge of said team however, finding leadership quite daunting as it requires her being the centre of attention, though if asked she will happily give her input for others to take on board and consider. What shines out most for people however, is the peace she seems to exude and her calm way of dealing with whatever comes her way.
On the inside, this is a different matter. Reno is very good at keeping her mind and her emotions separated, however she doesn’t tend to deal with her emotions, rather locking them behind closed doors deep inside of her. She also harbours a secret desire to go to Naboo and find the woman who frequently haunts her memories and sometimes her dreams. Always it is the same, the very one that is captured in a holographic image in her locket. A woman is holding a small child in her arms, sitting by a gorgeous lake in a lush green field, rocking her back and forth as she hums a gentle lullaby. This image and tune is where Reno finds the centre for her calmness and serenity, but behind it is the desire, the need to put a face to the woman and a name or words for the song she carries always in her heart.
Reno is a loyal, devoted, hard-working companion who, when her shyness has been broken through, can be quirky and fun while calm and level-headed. Due to the fact Reno keeps to herself so much though, it can be hard for others to find the need to approach her or make the effort to reach out when it seems she just wants to be left alone. The most common subject people find makes her open up is her studies, especially if someone needs help with theirs. Her kind nature, and genuine want to help others, makes her unwilling to deny anyone should they ask for it and makes an excellent tutor despite the fact she dislikes leadership of a big group. She makes a good friend, even if it is a one-sided friendship, and can be counted on to bring the best she has to offer in any team or partnership.
History: Reno was born in the year 38BBY in a small village in the outskirts of Theed, Naboo. She lived only with her mother, Sabeera Salmara, after her father left shortly before she was born unable to handle the coming pressures of being a father. He ran and never looked back, leaving Sabeera to fend for herself and her daughter as much as she could. Due to the fact she was born in Theed’s hospital, Reno’s midichlorine count was made aware to the Jedi shortly after she was born, and Sabeera was visited by the Jedi to discuss the possibility of Reno being taken to the Jedi Temple for training. At this time however, devastated by her husband’s cowardly actions, Sabeera was unwilling to let her daughter leave at such a young age, and requested the Jedi return when Reno turned 4 years old in order that she could make up her mind, and at least get some time with her only guiding star. The Jedi agreed to the deal, and for 4 years Sabeera cared for Reno and got to see her daughter grow. Despite sometimes struggling for basic things like food and clothing, Reno’s early childhood was not an unhappy one although Reno remembers little to none of this. Her only full memory is one of the night before her 4th birthday, when her mother took her one night to sit by the Solleu River, just looking up at the stars. There were no words, just the comforting feeling of her mothers arms around her, loving and protective as she rocked her baby girl back and forth and hummed an old lullaby. But in this peaceful moment, single tears were rolling down the mother’s face as she contemplated giving up the precious life in her arms. Even at such a young age, Reno was interested in the world around her and that which existed beyond; she was smart beyond her 4 years and had an unusually fast learning rate, when she showed extreme emotion odd things happened like when she was angry and would cry and scream objects would shake and move, and once during a tantrum the shelves had fallen from the wall. The galaxy had something special to offer her baby, and Sabeera knew as she sat holding her child close, to deny her that life would be one of the most selfish things she could ever do. Once Reno had fallen asleep that night, she waited for the Jedi to contact her and informed them that on the night of Reno’s 4th birthday, they could come and take her child away knowing that this birthday would be the last she would ever share with her daughter.
Reno had never been so frightened as she was when she woke up on that strange transport. The woman next to her had tried to comfort her, explain to her where she was going and what she was going for, but she wouldn't listen. Living in the outskirts of Theed and being of a poorer background, Rakia hadn't socialized with people much and had only ever talked to people with her mother next to her. She couldn’t understand why all of the sudden she was on her own, surrounded by strangers with her mother no-where in sight. Bringing her knees up to her chest and burying her face on her knees, she cried quietly the rest of the trip to Coruscant, never being one for attracting attention to herself. She felt abandoned, scared and alone, that feeling only compounding more when the one person her mother had apparently trusted to take care of her left her with other strange adults at the Jedi Temple.
It wasn’t until she was put with children her own age that she started to feel a little more secure...the children she was with also had no parents to look after them, just the people that were around them, and yet they seemed happy enough. In fact all they could talk about was the great adventures that they would go on when they were old enough, how cool it would be to learn to fly ships and battle enemies and visit so many different planets. Slowly her mind began to open to the idea of being in the Temple, learning the skills she apparently had locked away inside her somewhere that the Jedi would help her to utilize and before long she was diving head first into the experience. Her love of learning and her quick mind and memory propelled her forwards in her training, as well as her ability to be able to sit still for more than a minute unlike the other children her age. It soon became apparent that Reno’s best abilities came from her sharp mind and intuition. Her telekinetic and telepathic abilities developed at a fast pace through her training whilst in comparison her saber skills lagged behind in development as she constantly tried to force her ungainly long legs and arms to so what she wanted them to, which only got harder as she got older as they grew with her. It wasn’t that she didn’t understand it, she understood how it was supposed to be done...it was the making them do it that frustrated her. She focused too much on what she was doing, as she did with everything else, despite being constantly told she had to just let go and let the force guide her movements. She was always the one when the blinders were on that let off yelps of pain as she got zapped by the harmless bolts.
Despite this however, she grew from strength to strength, and at age 9 was at the top of her class thanks to her hard work and the incredible rate at which she absorbed the information thanks to the discovered Force Power Force Comprehension. She was skilled at meditation and her connection to the force was growing in strength the more she trained, developing a peaceful aura that she felt whenever the force enveloped her being. She was calmer than the rest of her peers, focusing on the now rather than the exciting future she could have ahead of her. Her duelling skills were the only thing that still needed greater development to match the rate of her peers, and also her ability to work in a group. Over the years, afraid of being abandoned by people, Reno had shied away from her classmates and preferred to spend her time among the datafiles in the Jedi Archives, often found huddled in a corner reading one or chatting with Jocasta Nu about the information she had been reading. Now, paler than when she’d joined the Jedi 5 years previous from her lack of desire to venture outside, she was a bit of a loner.
Alice, however, changed this.
She too had been one to spend much of her time within the libraries and quieter places of the Jedi Temple, and had taken notice of young Reno over the months that they had shared apart. Quickly taking notice of Reno's reluctance to work with others, as well as her ineptitude with Lightsabers, Alice had considered herself a wonderful fit for Reno as a Master, excelling in the things that Reno demonstrated a greater need in learning. Alice quickly moved in to befriend the young initiate, and despite being total opposites, the two actually hit it off rather quickly; Alice's assertive nature feeding off of Reno's more passive one, balancing the two out and helping Reno to come out of her shell (how ever slowly...). Sadly, this union was not meant to be, for Reno was deemed a bit too young to be properly taken as an Apprentice at the time. Despite this, the two kept in contact, and developed a friendship centred mostly around their time spent studying or meditating together. In that time, Reno felt less like she was missing something and even focused less on the dreams and thoughts that often disturbed her otherwise peaceful thinking.
With Alice’s guidance, Reno managed to gain enough skill in the areas she lacked in to be taken on as a Padawan by Jedi Knight Bakeli Dewir at the age of 11. Suddenly, the world Reno had known was opened up in new ways she had only ever dreamed of and learnt about, finding herself rarely at the temple as she accompanied Master Dewir on near every mission he was assigned, absorbing everything he had to teach her. Many of the trips were peace-keeping missions which Reno enjoyed thoroughly, as it gave her a chance to improve her negotiation skills and her quick mind liked to follow the way diplomats thought and routes they had to take through the Senate to get things done. In fact she was one of the very few Jedi who did take an interest in it. When it came to the more...physical missions she faltered some. She was not so incapable that she became a hazard of course, she could hold her own against a few battle droids and deflect and defend well. It was one on one that she had more of a problem with and something that no matter how hard Dewir would try, she just couldn’t unlock her mind to.
Over the next 5 years, Reno worked hard under Dewir’s mentorship, and formed her first and only true bond of friendship with the man. While she never let him close enough to become a father figure, she grew to respect, like and trust in him greatly and learned much from his teachings. Her mind became clearer and clearer, and her diplomacy skills even started to outshine even her Master’s, sometimes he even stepping aside for Reno to lead the discussions - something she considered a great honor when she considered how much of an impact these talks had on the galaxy itself, especially when many in the Republic were getting restless. At age 13, two years after Dewir took her as his apprentice, Reno was finally able to craft her own lightsaber, to her delight, in the caves of Ilum. While she didn’t like to use it for duelling, having one hanging on her hip that she could claim as her own made her feel like she had been accepted and gave her a constant feeling of strength and security. She created it in deep meditation where she had a vision of herself returning to the river of her dreams, swimming in its blue depths and looking up at the stars in the night sky with the faceless figure standing just a little way away, watching her movements but never moving to interfere. When she came out of the medatitive state, she found she had created a hilt not dis-similar to her Master’s own, sleek and graceful with a shine that gave it a wet kind of gleam when held up under the right light. Her life was turning out to be better than she could have ever dreamed of, despite still yearning to put a name and face to the person who so frequently appeared in the memories of her childhood, and she was well on her way to becoming a well respected and gifted member of the Jedi Order.
It was at the age of 16, when she and her Master received a transmission from Yoda to travel to Geonosis for an urgent matter that this life came to a crashing halt. The pair followed the council’s instructions and concealed themselves within the crowd that had gathered to watch the execution, before joining the battle for life that ensued on Master Windu’s signal. They fought together, side by side, in the middle of the dusty arena, getting pushed further and further back into a circle as wave upon wave of droids came flooding into the arena. It was here Reno faltered, never having come up against such a huge number of opponents before. All it took was that one second where she lost her focus and her calm, that she stopped covering her Master’s back, and Jedi Knight Bakeli Dewir fell from a blaster strike that Reno could have defended him from. Reno may have shared a similar fate were it not for the watchful eye of one of her closer friends - Alice Crysis. For she too participated in this battle, and she too lost someone close to her. However, Alice was quick to move to Reno's side upon sensing her distraught over the death of her Master, doing her best to shield the shocked Apprentice for the duration of the battle. During that event it was silently agreed upon between the two of them that, for at least the duration of the battle, that they would remain together. The plains of Geonosis were harrowing by their own right, but the rampant emotions between the pair made things so much more complicated. Alice was trusted to lead an army into a full scale charge against the armies of the Confederacy, but refused to do so without Reno. Since the fall of her Master, Reno had been existing in a daze - distraught, guilt-ridden, and full of doubt – unsure where to go or what to do, or indeed what would become of her now her Master was gone, thanks to her failure. Who could want a Padawan who couldn’t even protect others, who was nothing more than a liability?
Alice. That’s who.
It was her that finally broke through the dark cloud forming over Reno’s mind, insisting that Reno accompany her into battle, trusting her despite seeing what had just happened, exuding a confidence that the young girl did not feel. It hit Reno hard. Alice had lost somebody too, and yet like a Jedi should, she was moving on with no less grief for the fallen but with the determination and focus a Jedi should have. There is no Emotion. There is Peace. Drawing from Alice’s aura, and forcing her emotions back behind closed doors to uncloud her mind again, Reno followed Alice out to the plains of Geonosis and fought harder than ever before under Alice’s command. Reno has now been made Alice’s new Padawan, completing the bond that had been formed nearly 7 years previous. Reno knows there are times coming ahead as the Jedi dive into the Clone Wars beside the newly formed army, where she will have to face situations similar to that on Geonosis. She will have to participate in situations uncomfortable to her, and do things that go against her strict moral code. But, armed with her old Master’s teachings and Alice’s determination to teach her more, she feels ready to finally face these challenges head on and help bring the galaxy back to the climate she had previously enjoyed.
