Veterancy: The regiment has only been formed recently by combining the remnants of regiments nearly eradicated at the battle of Geonosis. This was done at the request of Grievous, who wished to have "battle hardened" droids.
Purpose: Special assignments personally lead by General Grievous, as well as acting as his bodyguard.

The droids in the 42nd regiment have recently been reprogrammed, updating them with the latest, most advanced programming available to the relevant droid type. Furthermore, the IG-100 MagnaGuards are designated and personally trained by Grievous to be capable of fighting lightsaber wielding enemies.

Tactics and Methods: In most cases, the 42nd Regiment's main purpose is to protect General Grievous along with the rest of the command staff and/or other important Confederate figures present at the battle. In these cases, it stays in the rear acting as a reserve. That how ever, does not mean that it rarely sees action. Grievous has a habit of staying near the front and frequently leads the droid armies in person. In these cases, they act as a light assault unit and make sure Grievous's flanks and rear are covered.

Aside from that, the 42nd is usually the army that accompanies Grievous as he embarks on special assignments he wishes to lead him self. How ever, that doesn't mean that it cannot be used as either an attack or a defense force.
