By the current year of 22BBY, the Republic has stood for little over 25,000 years, occasionally referred to by a different name but ultimately referencing the same organization. It was organized in such a manner that allowed for a Supreme Chancellor to oversee a democratic power in which a sovereign of collective leaders from many of the galaxy's systems would convene for mutual benefits, such as trade and safety. It's aim was unity through equality, and was relatively successful in upholding this.
Above most else, the Republic aimed to regulate the galactic economy. Many issues arose out of humanocentric organizations which required control as well, for many non-human species simply weren't treated well be humans unless under the watchful eye of the Republic. The Republic also aimed to expand outwards through the Outer Rim, little of which was formally explored and colonized by the Republic.
In more recent years, the Republic has grown mired with bureaucratic struggles which make quick and simple decisions taxing on time and resources. Endless discussions replace decisive action, leaving little real power in the hands of politicians, or even with the Chancellor, until the rise of Chancellor Palpatine and the beginning of the Clone Wars, where he began to receive more authority to make more decisions without seemingly endless debate.
